Daniel Ibbertson (aka Slope’s Game Room) – An Interview With

1. Tell us a bit about yourself

Ok then, My name is Daniel Ibbertson a sushi loving, cider drinking DJ/Gamer from the UK.

I have a growing YouTube channel called Slope’s Game Room and I spend a crazy amount of my free-time creating video game documentaries about videos games past. Sometimes its something obvious like The Complete History of a particular franchise like “Splatterhouse” “Streets of Rage” and “Metroid” whilst other times its something far more obscure like looking at Atari’s forgotten theme park or Sega’s 1st ever mascot (nope its not Alex Kidd)

Either way, I love looking into this sort of stuff and thankfully I have a growing list of subscribers that also enjoy what I do.

2. What was your first gaming memory?

My 1st gaming memory was 1 of these games…

– “Oh Mummy” for the Amstrad CPC 464. A simple yet fun game that is still very much enjoyable to this day

– “Bridge It” also for the CPC 464. A game that at the time (about 5 years old) I thought was quite good. However, now I realise that its probably the worst game I have ever played!

3. What are your all-time favourite games?

Sonic 3 & Knuckles is number 1, followed by plenty of others… Dance Dance Revolution 2nd Mix, Crazy Taxi, Streets of Rage 1, Burnout Paradise, Portal 2, Pikmin 3, Binding of Isaac, Revenge of Shinobi, SSX Tricky, Supreme Commander + crazy amounts more

4. What are your favourite elements of a game – what makes a game “great” for you? (story / action / puzzles?)

Simplicity is key in my eyes, It doesn’t matter how hard or complicated a game gets as long as it eases you in with simple controls and mechanics that are enjoyable then it will sit well with me. Once you have this nailed then everything else is just icing on the cake, (Level design, Audio, Graphics etc) However, the best games are the ones that tick all the above boxes.

5. Do you have a prized gaming possession?

Not really, sadly with 2 kids and a wife that isn’t a big fan of 15 consoles set up all at once (most of which never getting played) I ended up storing the large majority of my collection in the attic in boxes and because of this I have decided to sell the vast majority of what I own. I suppose my original Mega Drive is the best 🙂

6. Do you have a games “collection”? (if yes, could you provide images?)

Not really 🙁 Like I said, I do still own my first ever Mega Drive, 32X, Mega CD & Dreamcast and have kept all of the my top games for each system. So even though I do not have a huge collection anywhere near the size of other YouTubers/Collectors, It is still pretty big… and it’s slowly growing once again 😛

7. Do you go to many of the gaming events throughout the year? – if yes, what do you love most?

One of the big reasons I started a channel was so that I could communicate with like minded people about retro gaming and gaming events are full of people wanting to do the same thing.

Nothing like talking about classic Sega systems with a beer, bad food whilst playing on some free arcade machines 🙂

So far I have only been to a couple of events since I started a few years back due to having 2 kids arrive within the last couple of years. However, that will all change in February as Guru Larry, Nostalgia Nerd, Kim Justice and I will all be on a panel at Play Blackpool 🙂

Very very excited.

8. Favourite TV shows ever

Friends, The Office (US), The Young Ones, Ren & Stimpy, Bottom, The Simpsons, Rick & Morty, Harry Enfield, Him & Her, People Just Do Nothing, Sega Hard Girls + loads more

9. Favourite Movies ever

Everything made by Tarantino with Pulp Fiction and Django: Unchained coming up on top. I am also a huge Disney nut with Beauty and the Beast & Toy Story at the top of the list. Other great films include… The Wolf of Wall Street, Terminator 2, The Last Dragon, Moonwalker, Human Traffic, Lock Stock, Snatch, The Mask, Ace Ventura + loads more

10. 3 items you would take with you on a desert island

A powerful PC with plenty of emulation power,

A DJ set up,

A Generator

And finally, a message to fans.

Thank you all so so much for your support! I never expected to grow as quickly as I have done in 3ish years and I really do appreciate the support I get from everyone.

If you are deciding to start a YouTube channel no matter what it is (Pick ups, lets plays, documentaries, reviews) don’t wait… JUST DO IIIIIIIT! – then send me the link 🙂

My biggest regret is not starting sooner during the several years I spent thinking about it! I absolutely love doing what I do and its even better knowing that their are people dotted all over the world that enjoy watching my content 🙂

“and thankfully I have a growing list of subscribers that also enjoy what I do.” But I think we’re getting just a little ahead of ourselves. Ha, ha!
