Earthworm Jim 3 Is Confirmed To Be Coming, But There’s A Small Snag

We grew up with Earthworm Jim, its bizarre humour and even more bizarre design. This makes the news of an Earthworm Jim 3 pretty exciting, if it weren’t for one small snag.

In a slightly baffling decision, you have to buy a whole new console to play it. The console we mean is the upcoming Intellivision Amico that was revealed last year, which is a retro plug-n-play console set for release on October 10th 2020.

This makes sense as the video revealing the console did state that it would, as well as a variety of ‘enhanced’ retro titles, feature some exclusive brand new titles. We just didn’t expect one to be the revival of this long dormant franchise.

This console will be joining various other official plug-n-play consoles on the market, what with the PlayStation Classic and Nintendo iterations currently on the market, and the Sega Mega Drive/Genesis Mini and the Capcom Home Arcade on the way.

The Intellivision Amico doesn’t just boast new games, but enhancements to older ones like leaderboard support and online multiplayer, as well as the console having Bluetooth controllers, an online store, and an achievement system.

Back to Earthworm Jim, this series was possibly one of the defining points of the 16 bit era, with engaging gameplay and some of the strangest character and level design seen pretty much ever. In case you aren’t familiar with it, this exclusive is kind of a big deal.

What’s more, it has been confirmed that the original team is involved; so that means Doug TenNapel, David Perry, Tommy Tallarico, Nick Bruty, Mike Dietz, Tom Tanaka and Joey Kuras are all on-board – who all worked on Earthworm Jim 2 in 1995.

Here’s where this collaboration does make a lot of sense as the composer of the Earthworm Jim franchise Tommy Tallarico is now the Intellivision Entertainment CEO/President. So he’s clearly a driving force behind Earthworm Jim 3 being an exclusive to the Amico.

In fact, Tallarico himself said:

We have been talking about this moment for many years, it’s a dream come true to finally get the entire team back together. We’re looking forward to sharing a small part of our reunion and initial design meeting with fans from around the world. Intellivision Amico is designed to bring friends and families together and we are excited for fans and those just being introduced to the series to get a first look as we kick-off the design of the game.

We’re hoping Earthworm Jim 3 looks like the HD Remasters from a couple of years ago.

It’s undeniable that Earthworm Jim coming exclusively to the console is a selling point for it. The series might not be, or has ever been, AAA standard, but it definitely has enough of a cult following to make the Amico more appealing to veteran gamers.

Whether or not this exclusive will help the Amico, especially with Nintendo and Sega being in the ring of this particular plug-n-play battle royale, we will only tell with time. But, with a few more exclusives like this, and it might be a force to be reckoned with.

The other games on the Amico are old favorites, such as Asteroids, Centipede, and ToeJam & Earl. Each game will cost between $2.99 and $7.99, while the console itself will cost between $149 and $179.

The Amico launches on October 10th, 2020.
