Mario Is No Longer A Plumber According To Nintendo

Unemployed Video Game Legend?

The world’s favourite video game plumber is… well, no longer a plumber. Nintendo’s official Japanese Mario character profile was recently updated to reflect this change in an edit that should serve as no surprise, we’ve had a plethora of Mario games that would see him play Tennis, Football, and more, but we’ve yet to have the game that involves his life as a plumber.

The page has been updated with text that details that Mario hasn’t even done any Plumbing activities in quite some time! The text reads as follows.

All around sporty, whether it’s tennis or baseball, soccer or car racing, he [Mario] does everything cool. As a matter of fact, he also seems to have worked as a plumber a long time ago…

There you have it, folks! Seems like Mario hasn’t handled any pipes in what sounds like a number of years! Granted he wasn’t always advertised as a plumber from the get go anyway! His role is only really decided by the aesthetic of the games of the 80s, with Shigeru Miyamoto confirming this in an interview.

“With (1983’s) Mario Bros., we brought in Luigi and a lot of the game was played underground so we made him to fit that setting and, we decided he could be a plumber,” Miyamoto previously told USA Today. “The scenario dictates his role.”

Well, it seems like Mario is currently unemployed and is just in between jobs when exploring space or driving go-karts around larger than life tracks! Who would have thought?
