Gamers sure are a charitable bunch, none more so that the streaming community of twitch.tv. Over the past few months I have had the pleasure to watch and participate in some truly brilliant and entertaining charity driven live streams. I was watching when Five Nights at Freddy’s creator Scott Cawthon donated to the Zeldathon to bring their total to an incredible $196,000! Streams such as these take in massive amounts of support, with streams drawing in thousands of viewers allowing the charity to reach more potential supporters for their cause.
Speed runners are often at the forefront of these type of charity drives, dedicating their time and skill for the benefit of others. “But what exactly is a speed run?” I hear you ask. A speed run is an example of the ultimate mastery of a certain game, players showcase their skill performing incredible feats of dexterity and memory, often thinking 4 or 5 moves ahead while moving through a game’s world as fast as possible. Often, these players will take advantage of exploits of glitches left in the game’s code, for example: You’re playing Ducktales and you’re trying to make it to the levels boss, but a wall blocks the way. A skilled speed runner will use an enemy damage exploit where a certain enemy will hit Uncle Scrooge just as he hits the wall, this allows the player to phase through the wall, cutting considerable time off the run.
It’s this same charitable spirit and video game mastery that has been broadcasting 24 hours a day since the 26th of July that i’d love to spotlight here. Below are some videos taken directly from Games Done Quick’s youtube channel, these are some of my favourites of the past few days, with many, many more to come as the marathon does not end until August 1st. Click here for a complete schedule of all the games that are being played, which range from the popular speed run staples such as Ducktales and Mega Man X2 right up to some more modern titles like BioShock: Infinite. Summer Games Done Quick 2015 is benefitting Doctors Without Borders. Find out how you can donate here.
Doctors Without Borders is an international medical humanitarian organisation providing aid in nearly 70 countries to people whose survival is threatened by violence, neglect or catastrophe, primarily due to armed conflict, epidemics, exclusion from health care, natural disasters, or malnutrition.
