It’s been twenty-four years since Waku Waku Sonic Patrol was released into Japanese arcades and now, thanks to a determined individual, everyone around the world will soon be able to experience what it has to offer.
Waku Waku Sonic Patrol is a sonic the hedgehog themed arcade game that was exclusively released into Japanese arcades back in 1991. The game itself was aimed at children, although the cabinet is big enough to accommodate two adults, and it saw players take control of Sonic in a police car as he drove around a small city circuit avoiding other drivers.
The game itself is timed, and the overall objective of the game is to avoid other drivers and defeat Dr Robotnik within the time limit, at which point when the timer runs out your overall performance will be graded out of five stars. It’s a pretty simple and obscure game, as it does see Sonic the Hedgehog dressed as a Police officer and driving a Police Car, but it is one of those rarer sonic titles that is extremely hard to come by.
One determined individual however, who goes by the name of Will, has managed to track down the arcade cabinet and have it shipped to himself in America. The cabinet, which cost him $5350 including all shipping and taxes, which is around £3448, will remain part of his private collection but he does plan on sharing the game with the world by producing a MAME rom.
