Diddy Kong Racing is one of those classic N64 games that you always have in your memory, it’s not exactly a flagship game like Super Mario 64 or Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, but rather standing alongside classics like Jet Force Gemini and the like.
For many of us, it’s the first view of characters like Conker that we were ever given. At least until his game properly released a little later on. It’s one of those classic Rare games that had you smiling, as many of their Nintendo 64 titles did whenever you popped them into the system for some gaming goodness.
There is a heavy base of knowledge around the fact that Rare intended for a follow up that never came to be as the timing turned out to be around the time of their Microsoft jump. But did you know there was ANOTHER Diddy Kong Racing Sequel in the works by a studio that wasn’t Rare?
PtoPOnline, a channel dedicating to preserving video game history ended up releasing a little video on that very game…
Diddy Kong Racing Adventures was the name of the project, pitched by UK based Climax Studios, a team known for taking established properties and trying to pitch it to major studios in hope of a big break. They are doing well now, working on some fantastic titles for Ubisoft for example. A game would been a nice combination of adventure and racing, similar to the original Diddy Kong Racing and looked to be a return to form for the series with a nice fresh coat of paint on it.
What do you think of the project? It looks like it really would of been a blast to play!
